How chemical sunscreens work
Chemical sunscreens (oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate) absorb UV rays and convert them to heat. They tend to be lightweight and cosmetically elegant — no white cast. But they’re also more likely to cause stinging, especially around the eyes, and some ingredients like oxybenzone are being phased out due to environmental and health concerns.
Modern mineral sunscreens use micronized zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that blend invisibly on most skin tones. The “white cast” reputation is outdated — but check reviews for your skin tone before buying.
How mineral sunscreens work
Mineral sunscreens sit on top of skin and physically reflect UV rays. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the only FDA-approved mineral filters. They’re photostable, don’t degrade in sunlight, and are far less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions.
For sensitive skin: mineral usually wins
Studies show mineral filters have a significantly lower rate of allergic reactions compared to chemical filters. They also start working immediately — no 20-minute wait time. For rosacea-prone skin, zinc oxide has the added benefit of being anti-inflammatory.
The hybrid option
Some newer formulas combine mineral filters with newer, gentler chemical filters (like Tinosorb S) for the best of both worlds: cosmetically elegant texture with lower irritation risk. If pure mineral feels too heavy, hybrids are worth exploring.
Bottom line
For sensitive skin, mineral sunscreen is the safer default. But the best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually wear every day. If you hate the texture of pure mineral, a well-formulated hybrid or gentle chemical option is better than no sunscreen at all.
